The Germiest Places in Your Home
Although we like to think of our homes as our sanctuary, we're not the only ones who think so. You can probably already think of several breeding grounds for germs in your home but other places might surprise you. The group over at Healthline.com got some expert advise on where the worst spots are and how to clean them up.

  • Your Kitchen: No surprise here. Of course we immediately think of the sink and counters. However, dish towels and sponges can be even bigger culprits. According to Barbara Citarella, a certified infection preventionist, sponges can be washed in the dishwasher and dish towels need to be replaced daily.

  • Door Knobs, Handles and Light Switches: Although this one is a no-brainer, it's often not a regular place to clean in your daily chores. Using a disinfecting wipe once a week will help keep the germs at bay.

  • Make up Bags: It's truly frightening what germs and bacteria thrive on make up. Applicators such as sponges, brushes and mascara wands are thriving breeding grounds for bacteria due to their moist environment. Most high quality latex sponges and make up brushes can easily be washed out after each application and it takes little time to do it. Sponges should be thrown out and replaced about every two weeks. Mascara should not be kept more than three months. This truly is the case and not just a sales pitch from your cosmetics sales person.

  • Your Dirty Laundry: Washing in cold water won't kill all the germs even with detergent added. Making matters worse, wet laundry already washed left sitting in the washing machine can become a breeding ground. Best advice: don't shake dirty clothes out before washing, try to wash in warm or hot water and don't let wet clean laundry sit for more than 30 minutes.

  • Home Electronics: Items such as phones, keyboards, remotes, cell phones and home office equipment can contain more bacteria than found in your bathroom. These items usually are more neglected when it comes to cleaning than areas like the kitchen sink. Try disinfecting wipes that are safe for electronics or inquire at an electronics store what works best for your specific equipment.

  • The Bathroom: This one is goes without saying. However, there are items in the bathroom that might be less obvious such as, the shower curtain (which can usually be thrown in the washing machine), bathroom rugs, door knobs, toothbrush holders, inside drawers and inside the medicine cabinet.

  • Your Hands: Since your hands are the vessel in which these germs travel, continuously washing your hands throughout the day will help reduce the spread of germs and bacteria the most.

The last part "washing your hands" is the one that we should frequently do to avoid getting infected by germs obtained from the rest of the areas of the house.

Aside from maintaining the cleanliness of your home, I agree with the "washing your hands" part. When the AH1N1 virus has spread worldwide, it has been widely advised by health professionals to always wash your hands with soap and water as a basic precaution to prevent getting infected.
